If you’re like many of our legal clients, working completely remote is a new experience. Not having your desk, files and team in their usual spots — it’s challenging!
As you’re trying to deal with clients, vendors and the courts, it’s hard not to burn out. Remote work affects engagement the most.
Being an IT company, it’s our responsibility to understand what does and doesn’t work for remote teams. The tools and tips we suggest are based on our own successful experiences.
If you’re looking to keep your law firm engaged while remote, here’s what we suggest:
Engagement > Productivity
Both are important measurements, but focusing on engagement indicates the health of your team better. We’ve found that engagement and productivity are directly related. Improving one, improves the other.
Start with these observations. Is your team:
- Relaxed or tense?
- Communicative or withdrawn?
- Active or passive?
This gives you a baseline to measure against.
You can’t measure engagement if you don’t have ways to engage. Tools like Microsoft Teams are quick and simple. You can instant message or video chat with ease. Compared to email, it’s easier to send company-wide messages, see responses and answer questions.
Feedback is more important than ever. Here’s the crucial part: make sure it’s 360°. You should be getting feedback just as often as you’re providing it (if not more!). Empower your team to speak up and offer solutions.
Schedule 1-on-1 meetings with your employees. Discuss roadblocks they’re experiencing and ask for ways to improve.
Take that feedback and put it to action. When employees see their voice means something, engagement will rise.
Emplify asks multiple questions on a variety of topics. It gauges overall sentiments such as satisfaction and of course, engagement.
Maintain team spirit, even if it’s through a computer screen. Start with recognition. Work with your HR team to create recognition awards. Base them on your core values or fundamentals.
Spotlight employees who are doing a great job and explain why. We do this every week in our Weekly Culture Workshops.
Make work fun. Create activities such as Bring Your Pet to A Meeting, Favorite Sports Team Day and Best Desk competition.
We collect photos from those weekly activities and share them on social media. This helps our team feel connected and brings joy to the work day.
Your employees are feeling just as uncertain as you are. Embrace that.
Use this as an opportunity to be transparent. Talking about the state of business builds employee trust and loyalty.
Host regular state-of-business updates. Include your CEO, CIO, HR head and other important figures. Discuss what’s going on, how the company is responding and what the future looks like. Encourage your employees to ask questions too.
There’s no time like the present to focus on employee engagement. Once you work on that, you’ll see productivity and satisfaction improve too.
